University of Tasmania for Indian Students: No Application Fee, Scholarships for CBSE and Punjab Boards and the Two-Year 485 Bonus

The University of Tasmania teaches in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie, with study centres in Sydney and Melbourne for some courses, and runs the Australian Maritime College in Launceston. For an Indian graduate its strongest argument is migration: Tasmania is the one Category 2 area where the second 485 lasts two years, not one.

Why Indian students choose Tasmania

Tasmania offers quiet cities, the lowest fees of any university on this site for several subjects, and a migration path that rewards staying: the second 485 is two years long, and the state also runs its own skilled nomination programmes for graduates. The Australian Maritime College adds courses found almost nowhere else, such as maritime engineering and a maritime management MBA.

English entry is IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5 for a bachelor's and 6.0 with no band below 6.0 for a master's; some courses ask for more.

Fees in rupees

The Master of Information Technology and Systems at ₹28 lakh (A$41,950) is about ₹28.1 lakh a year; with the 30% merit scholarship, which needs 75% in CBSE or CISCE, about ₹19.7 lakh. That makes UTAS one of the cheapest routes to an Australian IT master's.

Regional status for the 485: Category 2

Hobart, Launceston and Burnie are in Tasmania, which Home Affairs treats as Category 2 with one exception in the graduate's favour: the second 485 is two years. An Indian master's graduate can therefore stay three years on the first 485 and two more on the second, provided they live in a designated regional area. Regional study also adds five points.

Our assessment

For an Indian student whose plan is permanent residence rather than a big-city job, Tasmania is the strongest single choice: low fees, scholarships linked to Class 12 marks and the longest regional 485 bonus. Compare it with Charles Darwin University, the other two-year option.
