Pathway Colleges to Australian Universities for Indian Students: Foundation Years, Diplomas, TAFE and English Courses
A student whose Class 12 marks fall short of direct entry, or who finishes Class 11 and wants to start early, can enter an Australian university through a pathway: a foundation year that leads into first year, or a diploma that leads into second year. Since 2026, students who move to a public university from a recognised pathway provider or from TAFE are not counted in that university's planning-level allocation.

Three routes
Foundation years: after Class 11 or a Class 12 below direct entry, into first year.
Diplomas: after Class 12 at 55–60%, into second year.
TAFE and VET: vocational diplomas with their own 18-month graduate visa, at a much higher visa risk.

ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) can be packaged before a foundation, diploma or degree on its own CoE. Ten weeks of ELICOS lowers the visa English minimum from IELTS 6.0 to 5.5, twenty weeks to 5.0. ELICOS enrolments fell 24% in 2026 as visa rules tightened, so package English only when you need it.
Why pathways matter more since 2026
A student who enters a public university from a recognised pathway college or TAFE is outside the university's planning-level allocation. That does not change the visa criteria, but it means a pathway student's later move into the degree does not compete for the university's share of new international places.
Questions from Indian students: Pathways to Australian universities
What is a foundation year in Australia?
A pre-university year of eight to twelve months that replaces the last year of Australian school. Completing it with the required score guarantees or qualifies you for first-year entry to the partner university.
Can I go to Australia after Class 11?
Yes, through some foundation programmes: Trinity College (Melbourne) takes CBSE or ISC Class 11 with 65%, Taylors College (Sydney) Year 11 with 70%, UTS College Class 11 with 65%.
What is a pathway diploma?
A diploma at AQF level 5, taught by a college linked to a university, equivalent to the first year of the degree. Passing it at the required grade leads into the second year.
Is a pathway better than direct entry?
Only if your marks miss direct entry or you want a gentler first year. A foundation adds a year and A$32,000–58,000 of tuition; a diploma costs about the same as a first year but admits students with lower marks.
Does a pathway count for the 485?
Foundation and English courses do not count towards the 92-week study requirement. A diploma that leads into a degree is part of the packaged study but the 485 is based on the degree you complete.
