Cost of Living in Australia for an Indian Student: The A$29,710 Figure, Rent by City, Transport and Work

Home Affairs asks every student to show A$29,710 for twelve months of living costs, about A$571 a week, on top of a year's tuition and travel. That figure is close to what students actually spend in Perth and Adelaide and a little tight for Sydney and Melbourne, where rent takes most of it.

Instead of savings, parents can show a personal annual income of at least A$87,856, proved with tax assessments less than twelve months old.

Most Indian students share a house or flat with three or four others in their first year, which brings a room close to the low end of these ranges. City-by-city detail is on cities.

A sample month

The Western Australian government's Perth budget for a student in a shared city flat: rent A$350 a week, shared utilities A$40, groceries A$80, phone and internet A$30, public transport A$15 and entertainment A$80, a total of A$595 a week. Swap the rent for A$450–500 and the same budget fits Sydney or Melbourne.

Transport

  • Melbourne: the International Student Travel Pass halves fares for eligible bachelor's, diploma and advanced diploma students; a 365-day state-wide pass costs A$556.
  • Brisbane and the Gold Coast: every journey costs 50 cents, for everyone.
  • Perth: a Tertiary SmartRider gives international students more than half off; CAT buses are free, and public transport is free on Sundays.
  • Darwin: all public buses are free.
  • Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong: no tertiary concession for most international students.

Work and tax

The visa allows up to 48 hours of work a fortnight while classes run, and any number of hours in scheduled course breaks. A student who stays more than six months is usually a tax resident and pays no income tax on the first A$18,200 a year; employers also pay superannuation on top of wages, which you can claim when you leave Australia for good. Questions from Indian students: Cost of living in Australia

How much does it cost to live in Australia per month for an Indian student?
About A$2,000–2,600 a month in Sydney or Melbourne with a room in a shared house, and A$1,600–2,300 in Adelaide, Perth, Hobart or Darwin. The Western Australian government's sample budget for a Perth student is A$595 a week, about A$2,580 a month.
Is A$29,710 enough for a year in Australia?
In Adelaide, Perth, Darwin or Hobart, if you share and cook, yes. In Sydney and Melbourne it covers a shared room and basics but leaves little margin; part-time work usually fills the gap.
Which Australian city is cheapest for students?
Adelaide: the South Australian government quotes a room at A$150–300 a week (typically A$200) and total living costs of A$350–700 a week. Darwin's buses are free, which helps further.
Do international students get transport discounts?
It depends on the state. Victoria gives eligible international undergraduates 50% off through the International Student Travel Pass; Western Australia gives a Tertiary SmartRider; South East Queensland charges everyone 50 cents a trip; Darwin's buses are free. New South Wales does not give the tertiary concession to most international students.
Can part-time work cover living costs?
A large part of them. At the minimum wage of A$26.44 an hour, 48 hours a fortnight earns about A$1,270 before tax, roughly A$2,750 a month. The visa still requires the full A$29,710 to be shown before you travel.
