Pick a subject that has an assessing body

A degree gets you the 485, but permanent residence through the points test needs a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the relevant list. Each profession has its own assessor: the Australian Computer Society for IT, data science and cyber security; Engineers Australia for engineers; the Ahpra boards for nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychologists; the professional accounting bodies; AITSL for teachers. Choose the course with the assessment in mind and read PR pathways.

Go8 or a cheaper university for the same subject

The gap is large: an IT master's costs A$34,433–47,600 a year at Swinburne, Charles Darwin, James Cook, Western Sydney, Wollongong, Flinders, RMIT and Newcastle, and A$54,400–64,000 at UWA, Adelaide, Monash, ANU, UQ, UNSW and Melbourne. Cheaper universities also include most of the regional campuses that bring five points and a second 485. Compare on universities.
