Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) for Indian Graduates: Two to Four Years Under AI-ECTA, Rules, Fee and the Regional Second Visa

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets a graduate of an Australian degree live and work in Australia with no restriction on the job or employer. Indian citizens get longer stays than most nationalities under the Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA): up to three years after a master's and four after a doctorate. Between July and December 2025, Indian nationals received 26,116 of the 72,205 Temporary Graduate visas granted.

  • Post-Vocational Education Work. For graduates of VET diplomas and trade qualifications in an occupation on the skilled list, with a skills assessment: 18 months.
  • Second Post-Higher Education Work. A second visa for graduates who studied and then lived in a regional area: one or two more years. See the regional second 485.

The study requirement

You must have completed, in the six months before applying, one or more CRICOS courses totalling at least two academic years, which Home Affairs defines as 92 weeks of registered course time, taught in English and completed over at least 16 calendar months in Australia on a student visa. English courses and enabling programmes do not count, and credit for earlier study can shorten your course below the 16-month floor. This is why most Indian students choose a two-year master's: it meets the rule on its own.

English, age and the police check

IELTS Academic or General 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each band, PTE Academic 55, or TOEFL iBT 81, from a test taken in the twelve months before applying. You must be 35 or younger, or under 50 if your qualifying degree is a research master's or a doctorate, and you must apply from inside Australia with evidence that you have applied for an Australian Federal Police check.

Applying

Apply online within six months of completing your course, while in Australia. The main-stream 485 had a median processing time of five days in 2026. You can hold the 485 as the main applicant only once, so plan the qualification that gives you the longest stay before you finish studying.

Questions from Indian students: 485 visa

How long is the 485 visa for Indian students?
Under AI-ECTA: two years after a bachelor's, three after a bachelor's with first-class honours in STEM (including ICT), three after a master's by coursework or research, and four after a doctorate. Most other nationalities get two years after a master's and three after a PhD.
What are the requirements for the 485 visa?
Age 35 or under (under 50 for research master's and PhD graduates), a student visa held in the last six months, a degree completed in the last six months, the Australian study requirement (92 weeks of CRICOS study over at least 16 months in Australia), IELTS 6.5 with 5.5 in each band or an equivalent, health insurance and an Australian Federal Police check.
How much does the 485 visa cost?
A$5,750 for the main applicant from 1 July 2026, A$2,875 for each additional applicant aged 18 or over and A$1,450 for each child. The second regional 485 costs A$2,265.
Can I get extra years on the 485 for regional study?
Yes, as a separate second visa. If you studied at a campus in a designated regional area and lived only in such an area for two years while holding the first 485, you can apply for one more year (Category 2) or two (Category 3, and Category 2 in Tasmania).
Does the 485 lead to permanent residence?
Not directly, but it gives you time to build skilled work experience, raise your English score and collect points for a skilled visa such as subclass 189, 190 or 491.
