PhD in Australia for Indian Students: Research Training Program Scholarships, Unlimited Work Hours and a Four-Year 485
An Australian PhD takes three to four years of full-time research, usually after an honours degree or a research master's. It is the only route where the government funds international students directly: the Research Training Program pays universities to offer tuition and stipend scholarships to domestic and overseas research students.

How a PhD application works
Find a supervisor whose research matches yours, contact them with a short proposal and your record, then apply to the graduate research school with their support. Scholarship rounds at most universities close a few months before the main research intakes; the scholarship and the admission are usually decided together.

Questions from Indian students: PhD in Australia
Can Indian students get a funded PhD in Australia?
Yes. Research Training Program scholarships, which universities award from federal funds, can cover tuition and a living stipend for domestic and overseas students. You apply to the university, not the government.
What do I need to apply for a PhD in Australia?
Usually an honours degree with second-class honours or above, or a research master's, and a supervisor willing to take you. Deakin, for example, sets these as its entry rule.
Can PhD students work without limit?
Yes. Students in a master's by research or a doctoral degree, and their family members, have no work limit.
Can a PhD student bring family?
Yes. Doctoral students are exempt from the October 2026 rule that stops most students from including family members.
How long is the 485 after a PhD?
Four years for an Indian graduate under the trade agreement, against three for most other nationalities. The age limit for the 485 is 50 for PhD and research master's graduates, not 35.
