Foundation, Diploma or Direct Entry: Which Route Into an Australian University After Class 12
Most Indian students with good Class 12 marks enter an Australian bachelor's directly. Those below a university's cut-off have two other routes: a foundation programme of 8–12 months before first year, or a diploma that leads into the second year of the degree.

How to choose
If your marks meet the cut-off, go direct: it is the quickest and cheapest. If you are a few points short or need stronger English, a diploma keeps the total at three years. A foundation year suits students who want a particular Go8 university and need a year to prepare; UNSW College's Standard Foundation costs ₹29 lakh (A$43,650) for 2027.

Questions from Indian students: After Class 12: three routes
Can I enter an Australian university directly after Class 12?
Yes, if you meet the CBSE or ISC percentage and subject rules. Cheaper universities take 60–70%; the Go8 usually ask 75–90% depending on the course.
How much is a foundation year?
UNSW College A$29,980–48,750 (2027 indicative), Monash College A$42,800, UTS College A$34,500, Taylors College Sydney A$47,690–49,800, Trinity College (Melbourne) A$46,770–58,050.
What is a diploma pathway?
An eight-to-twelve-month diploma at a university college that leads into the second year of a bachelor's, so the total time is the same as direct entry.
Which is cheaper, foundation or diploma?
A diploma usually costs more than a foundation year, but replaces the first year of the degree, so the total is often lower.
Do pathway students count against the planning level?
From 2026, students moving to public universities from recognised pathway providers are not counted in the university's allocation.
