Two ways in
Undergraduate entry after Class 12: a five- or six-year programme, with the UCAT ANZ or the ISAT and an interview. Graduate entry after a bachelor's: a four-year MD, with the GAMSAT, an interview and a grade point average. Melbourne's MD, for instance, takes graduates with the GAMSAT, an interview and a GPA weighted towards the last years of their degree, and asks IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in writing.

How many international students
The Medical Schools Outcomes Database survey of 2025 final-year students counted international respondents by school: Monash 65, Sydney 24, UNSW 19, Melbourne 19, Western Sydney 17, UWA 15, Newcastle and New England 14, UQ 12, Adelaide 11. Response rates were about half, so real numbers are higher, but the order shows where international places are concentrated.
The India question
An Australian medical degree is built for practice in Australia. The NMC's rules for Indian registration require the internship at the same institution that awarded the degree, which does not match how Australian internships work. Families who want a doctor practising in India should read the NMC's regulations and FAQ first. See tests and admission and fees.
Questions from Indian students: Medicine in Australia
Can Indian students study MBBS in Australia?
Yes, at most medical schools, through international places. Undergraduate-entry programmes take Class 12 students with the UCAT ANZ or, for several schools, the ISAT; graduate-entry MDs take bachelor's graduates with the GAMSAT and an interview.
How much does MBBS in Australia cost for Indian students?
Sydney Medicine A$100,500 a year (2027), Adelaide Medical Studies A$103,000, Monash graduate-entry medicine A$107,240, UQ Medicine A$109,328. Over five or six years, with living costs, the total passes ₹4 crore.
Which test do I need, UCAT or ISAT?
The ISAT is mandatory for international applicants to undergraduate medicine at Monash and UNSW, and to medicine at Tasmania, UWA (direct pathway) and Western Sydney. The UCAT ANZ is used by the consortium schools, including Adelaide, Curtin, Flinders and Griffith. Graduate-entry programmes such as Melbourne's MD use the GAMSAT.
Is an Australian MD valid in India?
Practice in India follows the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021: the whole course and a twelve-month internship at the same foreign institution, in English, then registration in that country, an Indian internship and the licensing exam. Australian interns are hospital employees, not students of the university, so check with the NMC before relying on an Australian degree for practice in India.
Do international medical graduates stay in Australia?
Most want to: 81% of international final-year students in 2025 said they intended to work in Australia. Internship places for international graduates depend on each state.
