Australian Student Visa Refusals for Indian Applicants: Grant Rates, Evidence Levels and How to Reapply

Between October and December 2025, Home Affairs granted 59.5% of student visa applications lodged by Indian nationals from outside Australia, down from 80.2% in the previous quarter. For all applicants outside Australia the rate was 83.8%. Indian students remain the largest group of student visa holders in Australia, but the margin for a weak application has narrowed.

How evidence levels work

Home Affairs scores every country and every provider on five indicators: visa cancellations (25%), refusals for fraud (40%), other refusals (10%), students who become unlawful non-citizens (15%) and later protection applications (10%). The country level and the provider level together decide how much evidence the Document Checklist Tool asks you to attach. Choosing a university with a strong record does not change the rules you must meet, but it can change what you have to prove at lodgement.

Before you lodge

  • Pick a course that follows from your education or work, and say why in the GS answers.
  • Keep funds in place for months, with a traceable source.
  • Explain every gap of more than two months.
  • Use only documents you could defend at an interview.
  • Lodge early: universities near their planning-level allocation move to a lower processing priority.

After a refusal

The decision letter lists the criteria you did not meet. Address each one with new evidence, consider whether the course choice itself was the problem, and reapply from outside Australia. If the refusal came while you were in Australia, check the notice for any bar on a further application there. For the Genuine Student part, see writing the four answers.

Questions from Indian students: Student visa refusals

Why are Australian student visas refused for Indian students?
The most common grounds are the Genuine Student requirement (answers that do not explain the choice of course, provider or country), finances that look borrowed for the occasion or cannot be traced, a course that steps down from your previous study, unexplained gaps, and documents that turn out not to be genuine.
What is evidence level 3?
Home Affairs gives each country and each education provider an evidence level from 1 to 3, based on visa cancellations, refusals for fraud, other refusals, students becoming unlawful and later protection claims. At level 3 the Document Checklist Tool usually asks for full financial and English evidence at lodgement.
What is India's evidence level?
Home Affairs shows evidence levels only through its Document Checklist Tool, which combines your country and your university. It updates the levels twice a year, on 31 March and 30 September. Run the tool for your own university before you lodge.
Can I reapply after a refusal?
Yes, if you are outside Australia; there is no waiting period. Read the refusal decision line by line, fix each point it raises with new evidence, and do not simply resubmit the same file. A student who applied from inside Australia may be barred from applying again onshore.
Does a refusal affect future visas?
You must declare it on later applications, including tourist and skilled visas. A refusal for false or misleading documents can bring an exclusion period on later applications, so never use a document you cannot stand behind.
