Safety and Climate in Australia for Indian Students: Emergency Numbers, Sun, Beaches, Scams and Weather by City

Study Australia describes the country as generally very safe, with a stable political system and a low crime rate. The real risks for a new Indian student are less obvious: strong sun, rip currents at the beach, rental and job scams, and weather that differs far more between cities than most people expect.

Seasons that surprise Indian students

Seasons are reversed: winter runs from June to August. Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart winters are cold, with Canberra nights averaging around freezing in July, so budget for heating and warm clothes. Darwin has a wet season from October to April and a dry season from May to September, and the tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April. Perth has dry summers and wet winters.

Scams to watch for

Rental scams target new arrivals: inspect a property or have someone inspect it, confirm the landlord's identity before paying, and pay only the bond and up to four weeks' rent after signing a lease. The bond must be lodged with the state bond authority, not paid to a housemate. Ignore calls claiming to be from immigration or your bank asking for money; hang up and call the official number. Australians lost more than A$837 million (about ₹5,600 crore) to investment scams in 2025, according to the National Anti-Scam Centre figures quoted by Moneysmart.

Your rights at work and at university

International students have the same rights to laws and police protection as everyone else in Australia. At work you are entitled to the minimum wage, a payslip and a safe workplace; cash-back schemes and pay in food or housing are illegal. If your university mistreats you, the National Student Ombudsman takes complaints from higher education students, after you use the university's own process.

Questions from Indian students: Australia

What is the emergency number in Australia?
000 (Triple Zero), free from any phone, for police, fire or ambulance. If you do not speak English well, tell the operator your language and you will be connected to an interpreter. Ambulance costs are covered by OSHC.
How do I report a crime that is not urgent?
Call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444, or report online in your state.
Is the sun dangerous in Australia?
Yes. UV levels are high all year in most of the country. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, especially between 10 am and 4 pm, and remember you can burn on cloudy days.
How do I stay safe at the beach?
Swim only at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags. Rip currents are one of the most common causes of drowning; if caught, raise an arm, float and swim parallel to the shore.
What if my employer underpays me?
Contact the Fair Work Ombudsman. Study Australia states that you will not lose your visa by talking to the FWO, and your employer cannot cancel your visa.
